Abigail’s Crochet Newsboy Flower Hat is next on my list. It’s NOT a dishcloth!! Woo hoo!! Even I was getting tired of posting about dishcloths. LOL If it wasn’t for the fact that I’m creating this blog for myself to have a record of all the projects I have ever made in the order that I made them, I likely would have skipped at least half of the last 10 posts I made. Ha ha! Don’t get me wrong, I loved each and every project, but it was getting a little repetitive. I was running out of things to say for each one since they were all exactly the same except for the recipient of them.
Today we move on to one of my favorite hats. It is my go to hat for birthday parties, and a little later on down the road you will see that I created a doll size hat to go along with it so I could make a matching set for each of my girls and their friends. I’m not sure if they were all fans of receiving them, but it was original and I knew no one else would be getting them the same thing.
This wasn’t the first time I stitched this project. If you have been following the blog for a little while you will remember I made one for each of my girls and I had already made a few others. This one was a gift for my niece at the request of my sister. You will see this hat a LOT throughout this stitching journal because this is a project I have made over and over again. At least with this one you will see many variations in sizes and colors which will help not make it seem quite as repetitive as the dishcloths were getting…I hope.

Abigail’s Crochet Newsboy Flower Hat Pattern Info:
This hat was created from my Ninja Turtle Newsboy Hat and/or Beanie Pattern. Instead of doing the ties, as in the Ninja Turtle Pattern, I crocheted a flower instead. You can find my 3 Layer Flower Pattern that I shared on another post. You can also find my pattern for my Flower and Car Fringe Textured Scarf Pattern which I designed to go with this hat to make a beautiful textured set to give as a set.
Originally this pattern was inpired by: Brookside Newsboy Cap by Cyprianne Nolan
This was a great pattern, but I did run into a few issues with the sizing of it not working out for me. I recreated the pattern later for myself in the form of the Ninja Turtle hat and recalculated the stitches for what worked better for me. I never wrote that pattern out for the flower version out of respect for the original designer. It was too close to her creation and I didn’t want to infringe on that in any way. I do use my Ninja Turtle pattern for the flower hat and just adjust the striping accordingly, but you can’t go wrong with either one. She has some really awesome designs and is definitely worth checking out.
For the flower part of this hat I used the pattern I created: Free 3 Layer Flower Pattern. However it would be easy to exchange it for a whole new look. There is a great book called 200 Crochet Flowers, Embellishments & Trims that has all sorts of other options to choose from. Click the link below to take you to it on Amazon:
Yarn Info:
This hat was mostly stitched using Lion Brand Pound of love in the colorway Pastel Pink. Bernat Softee Baby in the colorway Antique White was used for all the accents and trims. You can use any worsted weight size 4 yarn to stitch something similar. Great yarns / websites to check out would be: LoveCrafts, Vanna’s Choice, CreateforLess, Knitpicks/We Crochet and Knitcrate.
Stress Relief Gloves
If you are like me and you knit and crochet a lot, something that I have found is useful at times is a pair of stress relief gloves. I own a few different kinds, but I do think any of them is better than not using anything at all if your hands and wrists are bothering you. I’ll include a few links for you to check out.
Crochet Hooks and Tools
If you are just starting your stitching journey, chances are you don’t have tools yet. I highly recommend doing your research and reading reviews to figure out what you like best. I will include my recommendations, but definitely read and find what works best for you.
My favorite brand of hooks to use are the Knit Picks / We Crochet brand. They are so beautiful and well made. I have a wood set of the crochet hooks as well as this padded handle set. I love them both! For these smaller flower projects you will need the smaller hooks, so make sure you check the sizes of the sets you are ordering. I posted an additional option for a complete set you can find on Amazon below.
As promised here are a few sets from Amazon that would be great too. I don’t think the light up set pictured below has the smallest hook sizes but I think that looks kind of awesome and it would work for the bigger flowers and other crochet projects you would make. I love that it’s rechargeable! Again, be sure to do your research and read the reviews. If you buy a good set of hooks it’s likely you will never need to buy another set again, or at least not for a very long time. Doing your homework to make sure you are making a sound purchase is always a good idea.
Still need help?
Maybe you’re completely new to crocheting and don’t know how to do it at all. I taught myself a lot of how to knit and crochet through a kit. I posted a link to one that is similar to what I bought years ago below from amazon. There are also a LOT of online resources that can help you, such as Craftsy or Annie’s online classes I’m posting below. You can also find your local yarn store and check out what they have available. There are almost always options there to learn.
That should be about all you need if you want to try this one out. Please let me know if you have any questions or need any help.
Happy Stitching!
