Let’s face it, you can buy a knit hat just about anywhere. However, I will always argue that a hand knit hat is better quality than anything you can buy off the rack. Additionally, with a hand knit hat, you can had personal touches that you just can’t get when shopping in the store. I love the duplicate stitch technique that provides a way to add personalization to just about any knit project that I make. My son’s best buddy was having a birthday party and I normally try to make a birthday gift to make it a little more special and unique. Doing that for my daughters and their friends is way easier because I can think of a lot more girl projects to make than boy ones. Then I had the idea of making Ashton’s Knit hat personalized and it was very well received when it was opened. π

Ashton’s Knit Hat Pattern Info:
The pattern I used for this project was the Simplest Cap of All by Judy Gibson.
Yarn used for Ashton’s Knit Hat:
I used Caron Simply Soft Eco yarn to stitch this hat up. I’m not certain you can find this exact type of Caron yarn anymore. However, the regular Caron simply soft yarn should do just fine. It’s what I use quite often for projects now. For this project I used black for the hat and white for the lettering. Simple and clean. Black and white.
Other good yarn choices I would recommend to use to make this would be Vanna’s Choice and Red Heart Soft. Places to yarn shop for these brands would be Amazon , Lion Brand and Create For Less websites.
Needles and Tools:
Of course you will need a good set of knitting needles if you are going to stitch this hat up for yourself. My favorite brand to use, and the only kind I have ever really purchased, are the Knit Picks brand. I am a self taught knitter and I really didn’t have anyone to ask about what to purchase when I first started. I researched knitting needles the best I could and finally opted to go with this brand. In all honestly, I have not regretted it once. They are very high quality and the customer service has always been excellent whenever I’ve needed to contact them.
You can also find options at any of your local craft stores or even on Amazon. I will recommend several buying options and I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them. You will see that most of the options I recommend are interchangeable sets, and only ones that I have heard great reviews on, even if I don’t personally own each brand. Interchangeable needles are going to be the most economical way to get started as you can use them for a wide variety of projects. Whatever you do, make sure to do your OWN research. Find out what you think the best fit for YOU will be. If you purchase a quality needle from the start, you won’t have to buy replacements later on. They will stand the test of time and use, so do your homework first and shop smart!
Need more help?
If you currently don’t know how to knit, I’d be happy to stitch this hat for you, just send me a message to custom order. I do highly recommend learning how to knit yourself though! It’s a lifelong skill you will enjoy having. Check out the site for Annie’s below for an online learning option. I’m also including a link for a kit similar to what I purchased back in 2012 that I used to aid in teaching myself to knit, long before these great online resources were as readily available.
Please let me know if you have any questions about this hat or anything stitching related. I’d be happy to try and help.
Happy Stitching!
