Caleb’s Crochet Blanket ~ February 16, 2012

I finally reached the part in my stitching history that I began using Ravelry so I should have more info on each of the projects from here on out. The first project to kick that off is Caleb’s Crochet Blanket.

Here are the notes I took when I logged this one:
I wanted to make a blanket for my son that would last him as he grew up and out of the little boy age. He sat and looked at a ton of patterns with me, and impressively was able to look past the rainbow of colors on this pattern to the design that he liked. He then picked out the 3 colors he liked best and asked me to make it for him using just them. He’s 8! 🙂 Most 8 year old boys would see the pink in this pattern and move onto the next one. I’m so happy he saw the design in this one, though, it’s super fun to work up and I have really been enjoying making it for him.

It’s taken me forever since there have been baby gifts and Christmas and a ton of other projects to keep me away, but his birthday is coming up in March and I am bound and determined to surprise him with the finished project then. I think he’s going to love it!

I added a border which the pattern doesn’t call for. It was a little tricky on the ends, but I was able to adjust the stitches so it would work.

Caleb’s Crochet Blanket Yarn Info

I stitched this up using Lion Brand Fun Yarn in the colorways: Green, Blue and White.

It has been so long since I have stitched this blanket that I’m pretty sure you can no longer find this yarn anywhere to use it. Other options would be other worsted weight yarns. I love vanna’s choice from Lion Brand, or Red Heart Soft yarn, Caron Simply Soft or I’m going to attach a few worsted weight options at Knit Picks that you could use. It will not be an exhaustive list from that store, or for worsted weight yarn in general, but I wanted to give you some choices to choose from to help you get started. You can also find a lot of these yarn choices at the website Create For Less and Amazon.

Crochet Hooks and Tools

If you are just starting your stitching journey, chances are you don’t have tools yet. I highly recommend doing your research and reading reviews to figure out what you like best. I will include my recommendations, but definitely read and find what works best for you.
My favorite brand of hooks to use are the Knit Picks brand. They are so beautiful and well made. Pictured below are the knitting needle version, of which they offer a mosaic wood version of the crochet hooks as well. I just love them. They also offer a padded handle set. I have a wooden set (although not the mosaic one…bummer…they didn’t offer that when I bought mine) and I have the padded set and I love both of them.

I also have a cute little set from Amazon that I love too. You can buy this one fairly inexpensively and it comes with some tools and notions that will be helpful too. Several buying options to choose from and I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them. 🙂 I don’t have the light up set pictured below but I think that looks kind of awesome and I may have to get one and try it out. I love that it’s rechargeable! Again, be sure to do your research and read the reviews. If you buy a good set of hooks it’s likely you will never need to buy another set again, or at least not for a very long time. Doing your homework to make sure you are making a sound purchase is always a good idea.

Need More Help?

Maybe you’re completely new to crocheting and don’t know how to do it at all. I taught myself a lot of how to knit and crochet through a kit. I posted a link to one that is similar to what I bought years ago below from amazon. There are also a LOT of online resources that can help you, such as Annie’s online classes I’m posting below. You can also find your local yarn store and check out what they have available. There are almost always options there to learn.

That wraps up this project and all that is needed to stitch one yourself. If you have any questions or pics of projects you’ve completed yourself, please ask and/or share. 🙂
Happy Stitching!
