In this post you will find the details of a custom order for Kelly A’s crochet Flower hair clips. As you may remember, I have posted about crochet flower hair clips before. As previously stated, my girls have always had heads full of hair and for the most part it has always been long. Consequently, if there was one thing that I became a bit of an expert on during their younger years it was how to do hair. Additionally, I also learned what clips worked and what clips didn’t. Thus these crochet flower hair clips became a favorite of mine.
As you will see in some of the pics below, I designed and created my crochet flower hair clips with a non-slip grip strip in order to help hold them in place. While the girls all had a lot of hair, my one daughter also had super fine hair. As a result it was hard to find clips that would stay put and not fall out. Although I can’t say that the non slip strip was a flawless design and their clips never fell out again; but I will say it did help a lot and was worth the little bit of added effort.

What about gauge?
One great thing about stitching crochet flower hair clips is that gauge doesn’t really matter. With that in mind, if they come out a little bigger or a little smaller than you had planned, they are still usable projects for something. Not only can they be used as crochet flower hair clips, they can also be added to a hat or a bag or something else you have creatively thought of.
What Patterns were used?
I am going to state specifically which patterns I used to stitch these crochet flowers. However all of them came from the book 200 Crochet Flowers, Embellishments & Trims. Click the link below to take you to it on Amazon:
What yarn was used?
All of the crochet flower hair clips in this post were stitched using Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in the colorway Light Raspberry. You can use any worsted weight size 4 yarn to stitch something similar. Other options include Caron’s Simply Soft Party Yarn and Vanna’s Choice. Great yarn websites to check out would be: LoveCrafts, Lion Brand, CreateforLess, Knitpicks/We Crochet and Knitcrate.
Medium Crochet Flower Hair Clip
First, for the medium crochet flower hair clip I used the
Small Rose Pattern by Claire Crompton.
This can be found in the book 200 Crochet Flowers, Embellishments & Trims which I posted a picture of above.
As previously stated, I used Red Heart Super Saver yarn. Above you can find more information.
Following I am copying and pasting the notes I made for myself in Ravelry.
“Used a size F crochet hook and the exact pattern in the book. I LOVE the size flower it makes for hair clips!! Perfect!!

Large Crochet Flower Hair Clip
Second, for the large crochet flower hair clip I used the Small Rose Pattern by Claire Crompton.
This can also be found in the book 200 Crochet Flowers, Embellishments & Trims. Again, the picture of the book is above as well as links for yarn/thread used.
This flower also used a I (5.5 mm) crochet hook. In contrast to the previous flower where I used a size F hook. As a result of the different hook sizes, the flower sizes were different as well. Granted it was the exact same pattern that was used. To say nothing of the importance of your hook size with this evidence would be a missed learning opportunity.
Extra Large Crochet Flower Hair Clip
Last but not least is the Extra Large Crochet Flower hair clip. As a matter of fact, I stitched this one using the
small rose Pattern by Claire Crompton as well. As previously stated this can be found in the book 200 Crochet Flowers, Embellishments & Trims.
While for this flower I used the same size hook as the Large Flower Above, I did make one change. In addition to following the pattern once, I doubled it and created this extra large version.
What hooks and tools are needed to make these?
If you are just starting your stitching journey, chances are you don’t have tools yet. I highly recommend doing your research and reading reviews to figure out what you like best. I will include my recommendations, but definitely read and find what works best for you.
My favorite brand of hooks to use are the Knit Picks brand. They are so beautiful and well made. I have a wood set of the crochet hooks as well as this padded handle set. I love them both! For these smaller flower projects you will need the smaller hooks, so make sure you check the sizes of the sets you are ordering. I posted an additional option for a complete set you can find on Amazon below.
As promised here are a few sets from Amazon that would be great too. I don’t think the light up set pictured below has the smallest hook sizes but I think that looks kind of awesome and it would work for the bigger flowers and other crochet projects you would make. I love that it’s rechargeable! Again, be sure to do your research and read the reviews. If you buy a good set of hooks it’s likely you will never need to buy another set again, or at least not for a very long time. Doing your homework to make sure you are making a sound purchase is always a good idea.
What other supplies will be needed?
In addition to the supplies above, you will need a few other things to recreate these crochet flower hair clips. First you need the clips themselves. Second you need ribbon to cover the clips. Third you need felt and the non slip grip material. Below you will see some links for what I can find that would be similar to what I used. But likely your best bet would be to run into your local beauty retailer and/or craft store and grab what you need. While it may be easier to purchase online, some of these things are easier to buy in person. Indeed this way you can see a little more clearly what you are getting.
Additional Tools for when your wrists and/or hands ache
If you are like me and you knit and crochet a lot, something that I have found is useful at times is a pair of stress relief gloves. I own a few different kinds, but I do think any of them is better than not using anything at all if your hands and wrists are bothering you. I’ll include a few links for you to check out.
Need a little more help?
Maybe you’re completely new to crocheting and don’t know how to do it at all. Consequently this makes you feel like you might need a little extra assistance. If so, you might want online classes to help you. With this in mind, check out the links below for Craftsy or Annie’s. To be honest I take online classes often to improve and advance my skills. You can always learn something new! I actually taught myself to knit and crochet through “Teach myself” kits. In addition I’ll share a link for something very similar to what I purchased for myself below as well. Additionally I recommend you find your local yarn store and check out what they have available. There are almost always options there to learn.
