Custom Order Flower Newsboy Hat for Erika ~ December 4, 2012

Once I sent pics of the flower newsboy hat that I had made for my niece to my sister, she showed her friends and one of them wanted one for her daughter. 🙂 Sharing a small business crafter’s creations by word of mouth is the best thing you could possibly do for them. It is SO hard to generate business outside of your own small little circle (and you don’t want to have your friends and family feel obligated to buy from you). When you share what we’ve made for you with others and it leads them to want to have what we make too, it’s just the best feeling in the world. It’s total validation for doing what we do. I can tell you, it is so greatly appreciated!

Crochet Flower Newsboy Hat Pattern Info:

This hat was created from my Ninja Turtle Newsboy Hat and/or Beanie Pattern. Instead of doing the ties, as in the Ninja Turtle Pattern, I crocheted a flower instead. You can find my 3 Layer Flower Pattern that I shared on another post. You can also find my pattern for my Flower and Car Fringe Textured Scarf Pattern which I designed to go with this hat to make a beautiful textured set to give as a set.

Originally this pattern was inpired by: Brookside Newsboy Cap by Cyprianne Nolan
This was a great pattern, but I did run into a few issues with the sizing of it not working out for me. I recreated the pattern later for myself in the form of the Ninja Turtle hat and recalculated the stitches for what worked better for me. I never wrote that pattern out for the flower version out of respect for the original designer. It was too close to her creation and I didn’t want to infringe on that in any way. I do use my Ninja Turtle pattern for the flower hat and just adjust the striping accordingly, but you can’t go wrong with either one. She has some really awesome designs and is definitely worth checking out.

For the flower part of this hat I used the pattern I created: Free 3 Layer Flower Pattern. However it would be easy to exchange it for a whole new look. There is a great book called 200 Crochet Flowers, Embellishments & Trims that has all sorts of other options to choose from. Click the link below to take you to it on Amazon:

Yarn used for the Crochet Flower Newsboy Hat

This hat was mostly stitched using Lion Brand Pound of love in the colorway Pastel Pink. Bernat Softee Baby in the colorway Antique White was used for all the accents and trims. You can use any worsted weight size 4 yarn to stitch something similar. Other good choices to use would be Vanna’s Choice and Red Heart Soft. I would recommend any of these. A good place to check out to see if you could find good sales on them are the Lion Brand Website or the Create For Less website. Knit Picks also has a variety of worsted weight yarns to choose from that I will also share links for below that you could use to stitch this up as well. The list won’t be exhaustive, so make sure to check out their website yourself if you don’t find anything I’ve shared to be what you’re looking for. They definitely have a LOT more options than just what’s posted here.

Knitting needles and tools

Something else that comes in handy if you decide you’d like to stitch these sets up for yourself is a good set of crochet hooks. My favorite brand to use are the Knit Picks brand. They are so beautiful and it makes my heart happy just to look at them. Pictured below are the knitting needle version, of which they offer a mosaic wood version of the crochet hooks as well. I just love them. They also offer a padded handle set. I have a wooden set (although not the mosaic one…bummer…they didn’t offer that when I bought mine) and I have the padded set and I love both of them.

I also have a cute little set from Amazon that I love too. You can buy this one fairly inexpensively and it comes with some tools and notions that will be helpful too. Several buying options to choose from and I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them. 🙂 I don’t have the light up set pictured below but I think that looks kind of awesome and I may have to get one and try it out. I love that it’s rechargeable!
