Deidre’s Crochet Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Blanket ~ January 9, 2014

Deidre’s Crochet Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Blanket is the last item in this custom order. Also included was a hat, crochet ballet baby booties, a crochet sweet baby hoodie and this twinkle, twinkle little star blanket. I had made this blanket once before for a boy in light blue and green. Without a doubt I recommend this pattern for anyone looking for a baby blanket project. This really makes a great gift!

Twinkle Little Star Blanket (Couverture, Manta)
 by Bernat Design Studio

Here are the notes I made while making this project:

To piece together: I used a whip stitch so that it would be a bit more reversible. I attempted a back st and a slip st to join it together, but took both out because I didn’t like the look of the ridges it created giving it a definite front and back. It took a LOT longer to whip st it together than it would have to do it the other ways, but it lays flatter and looks better from the back than the other stitches did.

Note: To save time, next time I would actually just follow the chart (that I’m putting below because the pattern didn’t have it) and crocheting the strips in one piece so all I need to do is sew the 5 strips together at the end. I would crochet over the ends in the color changes to save myself even more time. This blanket doesn’t take long to work up, but all the sewing together definitely slows things down. I’d prefer the more seamless look of the pieces crocheted in one piece verses all sewn together. I would consider crocheting a SC border around each of the 5 strips too before sewing together so that it would go together a little easier. I’d have to see how that would look, but it’s a possibility for the next time I do this project.

Yarn used for Deidre’s Crochet Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Blanket:

Undoubtedly you are seeing a pattern now with the yarn used for the last few projects. Since these items were part of a gift set, the same yarn was used for each project. 😉

Pink Lion Brand’s Pound of Love in the pastel pink Colorway

White: Lion Brand’s Pound of Love in Antique White (the link provided does not have antique white in the available colorways, but I do believe that the Vanilla colorway would work as well).

Purple: Lion Brand’s Pound of Love in Lavendar (the link provided does not have Lavendar but they have a color called Quartz that is similar)

A few good substitutes would be: Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice , Red Heart Soft, Bernat Softee Baby and Caron Simply Soft, to name a few.

Great yarn websites to check out would be: LoveCrafts, Lion Brand, Knitpicks/We Crochet , Mary Maxim and Knitcrate.

What hooks and tools are needed to make this crochet sweater?

For this project I didn’t notate was I used, but it’s most likely a U.S. Size G (4.0 mm) Hook.

New Tools from The Hook Nook. An assortment of Hook Nook tools and hooks on a blue background

My favorite brand of hooks to use are the Knit Picks brand, like the one pictured above. They are so beautiful and well made. I have a wood set that includes the crochet hook above as well as the padded handle set pictured below. I love them both! In addition to these We Crochet / Knit Picks sets, I also posted a few other options for complete sets you can find on Amazon a little further below.

Make it even more fun and get the whole beginner crochet kit.

As promised here are a few sets from Amazon that would be great too. I don’t think the light up set pictured below has the smallest hook sizes but I think that looks kind of awesome and it would work for the bigger flowers and other crochet projects you would make. I love that it’s rechargeable! Again, be sure to do your research and read the reviews. If you buy a good set of hooks it’s likely you will never need to buy another set again, or at least not for a very long time. Doing your homework to make sure you are making a sound purchase is always a good idea.

This is a great starter option as well.

This one is on my wish list.

I have this light up set and I LOVE IT!!

Additional Tools for when your wrists and/or hands ache

If you are like me and you knit and crochet a lot, something that I have found is useful at times is a pair of stress relief gloves. I own a few different kinds, but I do think any of them is better than not using anything at all if your hands and wrists are bothering you. I’ll include a few links for you to check out.

I taught myself to knit and crochet through kits that I found at my local craft store, so there is always that option as well. I’ll share links to kits similar to what I used that you can also find on Amazon if you can’t find at your local craft store or can’t get to one soon.

That should be about all you need if you want to try this one out. Please let me know if you have any questions or need any help.

Happy Stitching!
