Ella’s Crochet Flower Newsboy Hat is the next project in my stitching journey. This was, and still is, one of my most popular items in my Stay@Home Stitchings Etsy Shop. As you will see that this was part of a custom order for a flower hat and scarf set. Without a doubt I LOVE these two items together!! 😊Furthermore, Ella is the sister of Jaiden if you wanted to connect the dots even more. Both of the hat and scarf sets I have been posting about for these two girls have been part of one big custom order.

Crochet Flower Newsboy Hat Pattern Info:
This hat was created from my Ninja Turtle Newsboy Hat and/or Beanie Pattern. Instead of doing the ties, as in the Ninja Turtle Pattern, I crocheted a flower instead. You can find my 3 Layer Flower Pattern that I shared on another post. You can also find my pattern for my Flower and Car Fringe Textured Scarf Pattern which I designed to go with this hat to make a beautiful textured set to give as a set.
Originally this pattern was inpired by: Brookside Newsboy Cap by Cyprianne Nolan
This was a great pattern, but I did run into a few issues with the sizing of it not working out for me. I recreated the pattern later for myself in the form of the Ninja Turtle hat and recalculated the stitches for what worked better for me.
However, I never wrote that pattern out for the flower version out of respect for the original designer. Because it was too close to her creation and I didn’t want to infringe on that in any way. I do use my Ninja Turtle pattern for the flower hat and just adjust the striping accordingly, but you can’t go wrong with either one. Without a doubt, she has some really awesome designs and is definitely worth checking out.
For the flower part of this hat I used the pattern I created: Free 3 Layer Flower Pattern. However it would be easy to exchange it for a whole new look. There is a great book called 200 Crochet Flowers, Embellishments & Trims that has all sorts of other options to choose from. Click the link below to take you to it on Amazon:
Yarn used for the Crochet Flower Newsboy Hat
Black: Hobby Lobby: I Love This Yarn. However if I would have picked I prefer the sparkles in the Caron Simply soft party in black sparkle colorway when I’m stitching for little girls. It’s always fun to have a little extra sparkle!
Blue: This was not documented in the notes I took on this project so I do not know which yarn I used for the blue. If I were to guess, however, it looks to be lion’s brand pound of love in the pastel blue colorway. Since I cannot be 100% sure, though, I will not state for certain that is what is pictured.
To be sure, you can use any worsted weight size 4 yarn to stitch something similar.
Additionally, other good choices to use would be Lion Brand Pound of love, Vanna’s Choice and Red Heart Soft. Without a doubt I would recommend any of these.
A good place to check out to see if you could find good sales on yarn are the Lion Brand Website or the Create For Less website. Knit Picks also has a variety of worsted weight yarns to choose from that I will also share links for below that you could use to stitch this up as well. The list won’t be exhaustive, so make sure to check out their website yourself if you don’t find anything I’ve shared to be what you’re looking for. They definitely have a LOT more options than just what’s posted here.
Crochet and tools
For this project I used U.S. Size I (5.5 0 mm), J (6.0mm) and K (6.5mm) hooks.
Furthermore, something else that comes in handy if you decide you’d like to stitch these sets up for yourself is a good set of crochet hooks. Undoubtedly my favorite brand to use are the Knit Picks brand.
I also have a cute little set from Amazon that I love too. You can buy this one fairly inexpensively and it comes with some tools and notions that will be helpful too. Several buying options to choose from and I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them. 🙂 Additionally I have the light up set pictured below. I love that it’s rechargeable!
Make it even more fun and get the whole beginner crochet kit.
Additional Tools for when your wrists and/or hands ache
If you are like me and you knit and crochet a lot, something that I have found is useful at times is a pair of stress relief gloves. I own a few different kinds, but I do think any of them is better than not using anything at all if your hands and wrists are bothering you. In fact I’ll include a few links for you to check out.
Need a little more help?
That should be about all you need if you want to try this one out. If you feel like you might need a little extra assistance and want online classes to help you, check out the links below for Crafty and Annie’s. Both have numerous classes to choose from to improve your skills or teach you something new. You can always learn something new!
