Erin’s Crochet Ear Warmer was part of the custom order request from the same Mrs. Achenbach I mentioned yesterday. This one was a special request for her daughter. She also wanted this one to taper underneath and to be fastened with a button. She wanted this one to be more “bulky”, so I found a chunky ear warmer pattern to use. I wanted the 2 headbands to match as much as possible since it was for a mother and daughter pair, so I still used a medium weight yarn, but just held 2 strands together to create the bulky effect.

Erin’s Crochet Ear Warmer Pattern Info:
The pattern that I used to base this project off of was:
Chunky Winter Headband by Briana Olsen. I crocheted the flower for my ear warmer using my Free Crochet Flower pattern that you can find on my website. I didn’t stitch all the layers of the flower for this headband, though.
Again, seeing these old pics makes me wish I had figured out how to take better ones FAR earlier in my stitching journey. LOL I am grateful to have pictures at all, but it is painful to see how poor the lighting is in some of them. ha ha.
I never actually created a pattern for this particular project, but you can check out some of my other patterns if you like. I have two that are available for free on this website: Simple Seed Stitch Dishcloth Pattern and my Moss Stitch Dishcloth pattern. If you scroll to the end of either of those links you will see an option to download the PDF file.
Small projects are the best kind to tackle when wanting to learn a new stitch and/or new technique. And what better project to practice on than one that people will be using to clean things up and perfect stitches and gauge aren’t really essential to a wonderful finished project.
Erin’s Crochet Ear Warmer Yarn Info:
This pattern calls for a bulky weight yarn. Since I was making both ear warmers at the same time, I wanted them to match as possible. And, chances are back at that time in my life, I likely didn’t have bulky weight readily available. You can always substitute yarn to your own preferences!. You need to love your finished work. So, whether you want to use bulky weight yarn as the pattern calls for (which I would probably do if I were to make it again now) or if you want to hold 2 strands of yarn together and make your own bulky yarn, you’ll be able to stitch this beautiful headband either way.
Since I used worsted weight for this project, the links I will share below will be for worsted weight so you would be able to recreate it to look as close to what I stitched as possible.
I used Vanna’s Choice in Black for this project. Other good yarn choices I would recommend to use to make this would be Lion Brands Pound of Love, Caron simply soft and Red Heart Soft. Places to yarn shop for these brands would be Amazon , Lion Brand and Create For Less websites.

Crochet Hooks and Tools
If you are just starting your stitching journey, chances are you don’t have tools yet. I highly recommend doing your research and reading reviews to figure out what you like best. I will include my recommendations, but definitely read and find what works best for you.
My favorite brand of hooks to use are the Knit Picks brand. They are so beautiful and well made. In fact I have a wood set of the crochet hooks as well as a padded handle set. I love them both!
I also have a cute little set from Amazon that I love too. You can buy this one fairly inexpensively and it comes with some tools and notions that will be helpful too. Several buying options to choose from and I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them. 🙂 I don’t have the light up set pictured below but I think that looks kind of awesome and I may have to get one and try it out. I love that it’s rechargeable! Again, be sure to do your research and read the reviews. If you buy a good set of hooks it’s likely you will never need to buy another set again, or at least not for a very long time. Doing your homework to make sure you are making a sound purchase is always a good idea.
Still Need Help?
That should be about all you need if you want to try this one out. If you feel like you might need a little extra assistance and want online classes to help you, check out the link below for Annie’s and Crafty websites. I take online classes often to improve and advance my skills. You can always learn something new!
I taught myself to knit and crochet through kits that I found at my local craft store, so there is always that option as well. I’ll share links to kits similar to what I used that you can also find on Amazon if you can’t find at your local craft store or can’t get to one soon.
If you have any questions about the information in this post please just leave me a comment.
Happy Stitching!
