Grandma and Grandad’s Crochet Cross Blanket ~ July 12, 2012

Grandma and Grandad’s Crochet Cross Blanket was such a blessing to make. My Grandparents all passed away before I graduated from high school. The only grandparent I really even remember was my Dad’s mom. She lived until I was 16, so she was a big part of my life until then. My husband is blessed because he still had 3 living grandparents when I married him, 2 of which are still living today. They have graciously adopted me as one of their own, and I feel blessed to have them in my life. It makes me feel like I still have grandparents.

My children are extremely blessed to still have all their grandparents living and even have had the joy of having great-grandparents for most of their lives. My son, who is my oldest, is 17. That surpasses the age at which I lost my last grandparent. I’m just so grateful we have all been blessed in this way. I do wish we all lived closer to one another so we can enjoy more time together, but am very appreciative of the phone calls we share and the time we do get to have visits. COVID is sort of messing with that time right now, so I’m praying it passes soon enough that we can see everyone again!! We miss our family!!

Crochet Cross Blanket Pattern Info:

Grandad is a retired Methodist preacher from Texas. It seemed only fitting to stitch them a Southern Cross Afghan for their 50th Wedding Anniversary. The pattern I used to stitch this blanket is: Southern Cross Throw by Michele Maks

Crochet Cross Blanket Yarn Info:

I stitched this up using Lion Brand Pound of Love in the colorways: Denim, Pastel Blue and Beige.

If you can’t find the colors you want in that brand, other options would be vanna’s choice from Lion Brand, Red Heart Soft yarn, or Caron Simply Soft. I’m also going to attach a few worsted weight options at Knit Picks that you could use. It will not be an exhaustive list from that store, or for worsted weight yarn in general, but I wanted to give you some choices to choose from to help you get started. You can also find a lot of these yarn choices at the website Create For Less and Amazon.

Crochet Hooks and Tools

If you are just starting your stitching journey, chances are you don’t have tools yet. I highly recommend doing your research and reading reviews to figure out what you like best. I will include my recommendations, but definitely read and find what works best for you.
My favorite brand of hooks to use are the Knit Picks brand. They are so beautiful and well made. Pictured below are the knitting needle version, of which they offer a mosaic wood version of the crochet hooks as well. I just love them. They also offer a padded handle set. I have a wooden set (although not the mosaic one…bummer…they didn’t offer that when I bought mine) and I have the padded set and I love both of them.

I also have a cute little set from Amazon that I love too. You can buy this one fairly inexpensively and it comes with some tools and notions that will be helpful too. Several buying options to choose from and I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them. 🙂 I don’t have the light up set pictured below but I think that looks kind of awesome and I may have to get one and try it out. I love that it’s rechargeable! Again, be sure to do your research and read the reviews. If you buy a good set of hooks it’s likely you will never need to buy another set again, or at least not for a very long time. Doing your homework to make sure you are making a sound purchase is always a good idea.

Still Need Help?

Maybe you’re completely new to crocheting and don’t know how to do it at all. I taught myself a lot of how to knit and crochet through a kit. I posted a link to one that is similar to what I bought years ago below from amazon. There are also a LOT of online resources that can help you, such as Annie’s online classes I’m posting below. You can also find your local yarn store and check out what they have available. There are almost always options there to learn.

That wraps up this project and all that is needed to stitch one yourself. If you have any questions or pics of projects you’ve completed yourself, please ask and/or share. 🙂
Happy Stitching!
