Matthew’s Hot Pad Sets ~ 1 Knit/ 1 Crocheted ~ August 23, 2012

August 23, 2012

While I was on the camping theme for my stitching projects, I decided to work up a few of these hot pad sets for my hubby to use with the cast iron pans we have. As you can see from the pic, the crochet version worked up larger than the knit version, but ironically was much quicker to stitch. I actually had to create the crochet pattern for this based off the knit pattern, and I will share those notes at the end of this post. In the end I liked the crochet version better than the knit version because it turned out thicker and bigger and it worked up faster.

The pattern I used for this project was the Rugged Camper Cookset by Marie Greene. This is the knit version pattern, the crochet version I created myself and will share at the end of this post. 🙂

I used Red Heart Super Saver yarn for these projects. Other good yarn choices I would recommend to use to make this would be Vanna’s Choice and Caron Simply Soft. Places to yarn shop for these brands would be Amazon , Lion Brand and Create For Less websites.

I’m also going to attach a few worsted weight options at Knit Picks that you could use. It will not be an exhaustive list from that store, or for worsted weight yarn in general, but I wanted to give you some choices to choose from to help you get started. Those options will be pictured below. 🙂

If you currently don’t know how to knit or crochet, I’d be happy to stitch this set for you, just send me a message to custom order. I do highly recommend learning how to knit yourself though! It’s a lifelong skill you will enjoy having. Check out the site for Annie’s below for an online learning option. I’m also including a link for a kit similar to what I purchased back in 2012 that I used to aid in teaching myself to knit, long before these great online resources were as readily available.

Here are the notes I took when I stitched these:

I found the pattern for this set on allfreeknitting.com. I made the knit set (which you can see in my finished projects), but it wasn’t as thick as I would have liked for using the cast iron set we have. So, I am attempting to do this pattern in crochet based off the knitting pattern. It seems like it will be easy enough, we’ll see how it goes. 🙂

Adjusted beginning chain to 40 (vs the cast on of 30). Should have left beginning chain at 30. 40 was too long.

I worked the pan handle according to knit instructions (ch 25 for the 25 cast on). Then I worked it in rows as per the pattern and then just sewed it together in a round when I was done.

The crochet version of this was definitely thicker than the knit version, so depending on how thick you want your potholder and handle to be should help decide which technique to use. 🙂 Happy Stitching!!

Please let me know if you have any questions about this or anything stitching related. I’d be happy to try and help.

Happy Stitching!
