Mom and Dad’s 40th Wedding Anniversary Blanket Gift ~ February 22, 2014

Mom and Dad’s 40th wedding anniversary blanket gift project was extra special. Indeed it was near and dear to my heart. Marriage can be hard, so every year we can add is a blessing in my book. It’s even more of a blessing when it’s your parents. Naturally I am aware that is not the case for many people. Therefore I try to really acknowledge what a gift it is that my parents are still together.

Now, it’s possible my mom may have hinted about getting a blanket as a gift. Not just any blanket, a knitted one. LOL To be honest it was great to have the gift idea. Any chance I get to make something special for someone is a gift to me as well. It’s even more of a bonus when it’s requested. That way, you know it’s actually wanted.

I found this pattern in 60 More Quick Baby Knits. Sadly when I looked this book up to share a link for you to be able to find more easily I discovered it is now out of print. Sad day!!

Free Patterns on my website

As previously stated in other posts, I also offer a few patterns of my own. In fact I have two that are available for free on this website: Simple Seed Stitch Dishcloth Pattern and my Moss Stitch Dishcloth pattern. Not to mention, if you scroll to the end of either of those links you will see an option to download the PDF file.

What yarn was used for this blanket?

As I have often shared, even though a pattern calls for a specific yarn, doesn’t mean you have to use it if you are going for a different finished look. That was the case for me with this project. The pattern was written to be a baby blanket. Therefore it called for smaller needles and a sport weight yarn. However, I was stitching this as an afghan for my parents. With this in mind, you can imagine that a worsted weight yarn was going to work better. Allow yourself to be creative. You don’t have to stay in a box. Let your imagination run wild!

Brown: Caron One pound in Taupe
Beige/Off White: Caron one pound in off white
Sage Green: lion brand wool ease in sage

Other great choices would be lion brand wool ease or Vanna’s choice . Lion Brands Pound of Love, Red Heart Soft and Caron simply soft . Places to yarn shop for these brands would be Amazon , Lion Brand and Create For Less websites.

What needles and tools did I use?

My favorite needles which are at Knit Picks. Previous posts of mine go into greater detail as to why I have chosen them over other brands, please scroll through and check my story out. Even better, comment on this post or send me an email and I would be happy to discuss with you.

In order to be fair and give more than just one option, I’m also including a few links to Amazon for some interchangeable sets that come with excellent reviews. I believe interchangeable is one of the most economical ways to get started in knitting. These sets are versatile and can be used for just about any knitting project. In fact, you can even use them to knit in the round if you learn the magic loop!!

Additional Tools for when your wrists and/or hands ache

If you are like me and you knit and crochet a lot, something that I have found is useful at times is a pair of stress relief gloves. I own a few different kinds, but I do think any of them is better than not using anything at all if your hands and wrists are bothering you. I’ll include a few links for you to check out.

Need a little more help?

That should be about all you need if you want to try this one out. If you feel like you might need a little extra assistance and want online classes to help you, check out the link below for Annie’s and Crafty websites. I take online classes often to improve and advance my skills. You can always learn something new!

I taught myself to knit and crochet through kits that I found at my local craft store, so there is always that option as well. I’ll share links to kits similar to what I used that you can also find on Amazon if you can’t find at your local craft store or can’t get to one soon.

Happy Stitching!
