Tyler’s Knit Blanket ~ April 7, 2012

Tyler’s knit blanket was my first knit blanket. Additionally it was a project that made me absolutely fall in love with the knitting craft. This was a gift for my nephew which added to the joy in stitching it.

Looking back at the notes I took while stitching this blanket has me chuckling a bit to see how far I’ve come over the years. I would say I’m a total fan of the slip stitch technique in knit. It is an incredibly easy way to give the complicated look of colorwork while actually only working with one color at a time. I do have my pattern notes at the end of this post to help any newbie knitters such as I was myself when I attempted this project for the first time. You advanced knitters will likely laugh at me a little, but surely there is someone else out there who is just starting out that will need these notes to succeed. 😉

Tyler’s Knit Blanket Pattern Info:

The pattern I used to stitch this blanket is: Diamond Blanket by Bernat Design Studio

Tyler’s Knit Blanket Yarn Info:

I stitched this up using Lion Brand Pound of Love in the colorways: Beige, Denim and Antique White and Lion Brand Wool-Ease in colorway: Avocado.

If my yarn selection doesn’t work for you for some reason, here are some other worsted weight options. I’m not sure Lion Brand Still carries the worsted weight Wool Ease so these other choices may help if you can’t find it. I love vanna’s choice from Lion Brand (which I consider very comparable to the worsted weight wool ease), or Red Heart Soft yarn, Caron Simply Soft or I’m going to attach a few worsted weight options at Knit Picks that you could use. It will not be an exhaustive list from that store, or for worsted weight yarn in general, but I wanted to give you some choices to choose from to help you get started. You can also find a lot of these yarn choices at the website Create For Less and Amazon.

Knitting Needles and Tools:

If you are just starting your stitching journey, chances are you don’t have tools yet. I highly recommend doing your research and reading reviews to figure out what you like best. I will include my recommendations, but definitely read and find what works best for you.
My favorite brand of needles to use are the Knit Picks brand. They are so beautiful and well made. Pictured below are a mosaic wood version. I just love them.

You can also find options at any of your local craft stores or even on Amazon. I’ll be sure to include a few other links as well. Several buying options to choose from and I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them. 🙂 You will see that most of the options I recommend are interchangeable sets, and only ones that I have heard great reviews on, even if I don’t personally own each brand. Interchangeable needles are going to be the most economical way to get started as you can use them for a wide variety of projects. Whatever you do, I can’t stress enough to make sure to do your research. If you purchase a quality needle from the start, you won’t have to buy replacements later on. They will stand the test of time and use, so do your homework first and shop smart!

Still Need Help?

Maybe you’re completely new to knitting and/or don’t know how to do it at all. I taught myself a lot of how to knit and crochet through a kit. I posted a link to one that is similar to what I bought years ago below from amazon. There are also a LOT of online resources that can help you, such as Annie’s online classes I’m posting below. Those kinds of resources were not available (that I knew of) when I was learning how to stitch. You can also find your local yarn store and check out what classes they have available. There are almost always options there to learn. If you decide you’d rather not learn but would like this blanket, I’d be happy to stitch this up for you, just send me a message to custom order.

A few final notes:

Finally, here are the few little notes I took for myself and saved when I stitched this up:

I used size 9 circular needles with a 40 in cable.

I saw one of the projects listed not cutting the yarn after each color change but weaving them up the sides since it’s only 2 rows per color, I’m going to try that method and see how it goes. Definitely the way to go with working this pattern. Very easy to do and a lot less ends to weave in.

not s11 but SL 1. This may be a stupid note for you experienced knitters, but this is the first blanket I’ve ever done and I was TOTALLY stumped thinking it was s11. Was a little timid trying this pattern until I figured that part out. This note is for any newbie’s like me. 🙂

I did not use the border written in the pattern. I created my own with a combination of #42 and #6 from the “Around the Corner Crochet Border” book. You will find a link for this book below:

That about sums it up…

That wraps up this project and all that is needed to stitch one yourself. If you have any questions or pics of projects you’ve completed yourself, please ask and/or share. 🙂
Happy Stitching!
