Wendy’s Crochet Prayer Shawl ~ May 13, 2014

There are a few projects in my stitching history that are painful to remember. They bring tears to my eyes evening thinking about them and the recipients they were made for. Wendy’s Crochet Prayer Shawl is one such project.

Wendy was a fellow preschool mama the year my third child was attending preschool. That sweet woman would show up with a smile on her face every day. Her entire nature was pure peace and joy. I would have never guessed in a million years that she was battling cancer. It wasn’t until near the end of the year and when her health took a dive for the worst that I became aware of what was going on. As I’m sure you can imagine, I felt terrible that I hadn’t figured it out sooner. To be sure, the minute I knew the situation, I set to stitching her a prayer shawl.

What is a prayer shawl? You may be asking this very question. Naturally as a woman of faith my immediate instinct in this situation is to lift someone up in prayer that I know has a need. However I get distracted fairly easily in my prayer life. Now I have discovered if I am working on a project for them, it helps me keep focused on praying for them as well. Prayer is worked into each and every stitch. So when they wrap that shawl around their shoulders, it is like they are being wrapped up in prayer.

It is with great sadness that I share that Wendy passed away shortly after receiving my gift to her. I do pray it gave her some comfort. My heart still aches to this day over her loss. A mother should never die so young.

Wendy’s Crochet Prayer Shawl Pattern Info:

Power of Three Shawl by Elizabeth Barnet

“The classic shell pattern looks more difficult than it is. A good pattern for a beginner to try, it’s easy and fun, and it works up quickly. Stiches in three carry a special significance for some, representing Father, Son, and Holy Ghost or faith, hope, and love.” from Elizabeth Barnet, Franklin Lakes, New Jersey

Yarn used

Bernat Softee Baby in the Ocean colorway

A few good substitutes would be: Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice , Red Heart Soft, Bernat Softee Baby and Caron Simply Soft, to name a few.

Great yarn websites to check out would be: LoveCrafts, Lion Brand, Knitpicks/We Crochet , Mary Maxim and Knitcrate.

Crochet Hooks and tools

For this project I used U.S. Size 6.5 mm(K) hook

Furthermore, something else that comes in handy if you decide you’d like to stitch these sets up for yourself is a good set of crochet hooks. Undoubtedly my favorite brand to use are the Knit Picks brand.

I also have a cute little set from Amazon that I love too. You can buy this one fairly inexpensively and it comes with some tools and notions that will be helpful too. Several buying options to choose from and I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them. 🙂 Additionally I have the light up set pictured below. I love that it’s rechargeable!

Make it even more fun and get the whole beginner crochet kit.

Additional Tools for when your wrists and/or hands ache

If you are like me and you knit and crochet a lot, something that I have found is useful at times is a pair of stress relief gloves. I own a few different kinds, but I do think any of them is better than not using anything at all if your hands and wrists are bothering you. In fact I’ll include a few links for you to check out.
