I am so excited to share my free crochet flower pattern. There is no better way to add an extra special touch to a project than by stitching up a crochet flower to attach to it. Granting that you’re making the project for someone who likes flowers, that is, LOL. It is such a quick and easy way to enhance any finished product. I love the flower hats I have stitched over the years…and I have made a LOT of them.
Initially I had started to stitch a hat with a double stripe in the center and I wanted a flower that would complement that really well. I couldn’t find anything on the internet or in any of the books I had that was what I was looking for. I wanted mine to have 6 petals and have the option to make it multi-colored if I wanted. What do you do when you can’t find the pattern you want anywhere? You design your own. This one is just too handy not to share.

My 3 Layer Flower Pattern
Not only is this a multi layer crochet flower, it can also be made in up to 4 Colors!
Tools:
I Hook (5.5mm)
Yarn/Tapestry Needle
Stitch Marker
*Optional: Button or Gem for the center of the flower
Yarn:
Any Worsted Weight (size 4) Yarn. However you can use any yarn you want for this. With this in mind, please note that changing the size of the yarn will alter the size of the flower. Whether it makes the crochet flower bigger or smaller depends on the size yarn you substitute.
Free Crochet Flower Pattern Instructions:
Rnd 1: First Color: Magic Ring, Ch 1, 6 sc into ring, join with sl st, tighten and fasten off (if changing colors)
Rnd 2: Second Color: Join new color with sl st into any st. (sl st, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sl st) into each of the 6 sc. Join with sl st to first petal (in first sl st). Fasten off (if changing colors).
Rnd 3: Third Color: Join next color with sl st between any 2 petals in the backs of Rnd 2. Ch 4. sl st in next sp between next 2 petals. Repeat around – 6 ch 4 spaces made.
Rnd 4: In each ch 4 space (sl st, hdc, dc, tc, dc, hdc, sl st). Join with sl st to first petal of this rnd and fasten off (if changing colors)
Rnd 5: Fourth Color: Join next color with sl st to center post of previous color between any 2 petals. Ch 5, sl st in center post between the next 2 petals. Do this 6 times around making 6 ch 5 spaces.
Rnd 6: In each ch 5 space (sl st, hdc, 2 dc, 3 tc, 2dc, hdc, sl st) around making your final 6 petals. Join with sl st to first petal and fasten off leaving long tail for sewing onto your project.
Finishing up:
Use all the ends you have from each color to nicely sew and secure your petals in place. This way they do not fold up and get messy looking. Instead of just weaving in your ends, it’s nice to have them have a purpose in giving your flower just the right finishing touch.
Don’t have hooks yet? Here is what I recommend:
If you are just starting your stitching journey, chances are you don’t have tools yet. I highly recommend doing your research and reading reviews to figure out what you like best. I will include my recommendations, but definitely read and find what works best for you.
My favorite brand of hooks to use are the Knit Picks brand. They are so beautiful and well made. I have a wood set of the crochet hooks as well as this padded handle set. I love them both! For these smaller flower projects you will need the smaller hooks, so make sure you check the sizes of the sets you are ordering. I posted an additional option for a complete set you can find on Amazon below.
As promised here are a few sets from Amazon that would be great too. I don’t think the light up set pictured below has the smallest hook sizes but I think that looks kind of awesome and it would work for the bigger flowers and other crochet projects you would make. I love that it’s rechargeable! Again, be sure to do your research and read the reviews. If you buy a good set of hooks it’s likely you will never need to buy another set again, or at least not for a very long time. Doing your homework to make sure you are making a sound purchase is always a good idea.
What other supplies will you need?
On the condition that you want to add a little extra “bling” to your free crochet Flower, I’m including a few more links. Even if you choose to do the center of the flower in it’s own color, you may still want buttons or gems for the center of the flower.

Additional Tools for when your wrists and/or hands ache
If you are like me and you knit and crochet a lot, something that I have found is useful at times is a pair of stress relief gloves. I own a few different kinds, but I do think any of them is better than not using anything at all if your hands and wrists are bothering you. I’ll include a few links for you to check out.
Need a little more help?
That should be about all you need if you want to try this one out. If you feel like you might need a little extra assistance and want online classes to help you, check out the link below for Annie’s and Crafty websites. I take online classes often to improve and advance my skills. You can always learn something new!
I taught myself to knit and crochet through kits that I found at my local craft store, so there is always that option as well. I’ll share links to kits similar to what I used that you can also find on Amazon if you can’t find at your local craft store or can’t get to one soon.

Feel free to ask me any questions on this pattern. I have made this flower a bazillion times so this is a pattern that I do more from memory than from being written down. I’d love feedback if you try it and something doesn’t quite make sense. It will help me tweak it for others to use it in the future. Thanks so much!
