2016 was the year of crocheted blankets. This Crochet American Flag Blanket was stitched for my brother in law and his wife as a wedding gift. However, once this blanket was done, it was a bit of a hot commodity. Everyone in the family wanted one. To be fair, it could have had a lot to do with the fact that my husband was about to deploy and we were all feeling a little more patriotic than normal.

Crochet American Flag Blanket by Leisure Arts
For this project I did the pattern as written. For future projects I did figure out how to adjust the star section of the pattern to include the accurate number of stars to truly represent the American Flag. I didn’t like how it wasn’t true to what it should be.
Yarn used for the Crochet American Flag Blanket
GRRRRR….more frustration with lack of notation! I did not write down or notate anywhere the yarn that I used for so many of these projects I made. The pattern just lists worsted weight yarn and not a specific brand to use. While most of the time I would say I thought I used Vanna’s Choice or Red Heart Soft, I don’t think that was the yarn I used for these blankets. In fact, if I remember correctly, I think I used Loops and Threads Impeccable yarn. Without a doubt you should be safe using just about any worsted weight yarn for this project.
A few good substitutes would be: Lion Brand , Red Heart Soft, Bernat Softee Baby and Caron Simply Soft, to name a few.
Great yarn websites to check out would be: LoveCrafts, Lion Brand, Knitpicks/We Crochet , and Mary Maxim.
Crochet Hooks and tools
For this project I used U.S. Size J (6.0 mm) hook.
Furthermore, something else that comes in handy if you decide you’d like to stitch these sets up for yourself is a good set of crochet hooks. Undoubtedly my favorite brand to use are the Knit Picks brand.
I also have a cute little set from Amazon that I love too. You can buy this one fairly inexpensively and it comes with some tools and notions that will be helpful too. Several buying options to choose from and I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them. 🙂 Additionally I have the light up set pictured below. I love that it’s rechargeable!
Additional Tools for when your wrists and/or hands ache
If you are like me and you knit and crochet a lot, something that I have found is useful at times is a pair of stress relief gloves. I own a few different kinds, but I do think any of them is better than not using anything at all if your hands and wrists are bothering you. In fact I’ll include a few links for you to check out.
