Matthew’s Crochet American Flag Blanket ~ September 9, 2016

Well, if you feel like it’s been a long time since you’ve seen a post from me, you’d be right. In fact, it’s been since the beginning of September last year, 2023, that I’ve created a new blog post. It so happens that I had gotten a bit burned out with the whole blogging thing. Even now, I’m struggling to get this kicked off again. Time has really not been in abundance. Therefore, this has taken a back burner. Without a doubt, when in came time to do this post on Matthew’s Crochet American flag blanket, I wanted to have a little time to tell about.

Now, I won’t go into great detail. However I would be remiss if I didn’t say that this blanket was stitched while I prepared to tell my husband goodbye for a deployment to Iraq. He had picked on and teased me for years that I had never made him anything. When he had seen the blanket I had made for his brother and his wife for their wedding gift, he repeatedly reminded me that he wouldn’t mind having one of those himself. Not too subtly either. Ha ha. And so, for his birthday/deployment gift, I stitched him this blanket.

Crochet American Flag Blanket by Leisure Arts

For this project I did figure out how to adjust the star section of the pattern to include the accurate number of stars to truly represent the American Flag. I didn’t like how it wasn’t true to what it should be. Now that I am typing this in April of 2024, should I stitch this blanket again, I would like to adjust the star section to actually look like stars. These ones looked a little more like flowers. Eventually I will get it exactly like I like it.

Yarn used for the Crochet American Flag Blanket

Once again I have more frustration with lack of notation! I did not write down or notate anywhere the yarn that I used for so many of these projects I made. The pattern just lists worsted weight yarn and not a specific brand to use. While most of the time I would say I thought I used Vanna’s Choice or Red Heart Soft, I don’t think that was the yarn I used for these blankets. In fact, if I remember correctly, I think I used Loops and Threads Impeccable yarn. Without a doubt you should be safe using just about any worsted weight yarn for this project.

A few good substitutes would be: Lion Brand , Red Heart Soft, Bernat Softee Baby and Caron Simply Soft, to name a few.

Great yarn websites to check out would be: LoveCrafts, Lion Brand, Knitpicks/We Crochet , and Mary Maxim.

Crochet Hooks and tools

For this project I used U.S. Size J (6.0 mm) hook.

Furthermore, something else that comes in handy if you decide you’d like to stitch these sets up for yourself is a good set of crochet hooks. Undoubtedly my favorite brand to use are the Knit Picks brand.

I also have a cute little set from Amazon that I love too. You can buy this one fairly inexpensively and it comes with some tools and notions that will be helpful too. Several buying options to choose from and I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them. 🙂 Additionally I have the light up set pictured below. I love that it’s rechargeable!

Additional Tools for when your wrists and/or hands ache

If you are like me and you knit and crochet a lot, something that I have found is useful at times is a pair of stress relief gloves. I own a few different kinds, but I do think any of them is better than not using anything at all if your hands and wrists are bothering you. In fact I’ll include a few links for you to check out.
