DMC Nova Vita Upcycled Yarn for environmentally friendly Crochet soap lifts

So, what is the project that I chose to use this awesome recycled cotton yarn for? Crochet soap lifts of course! And if you don’t know what that is, boy are you missing out. In full disclosure, I am a bar soap kind of girl. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some scented body wash too. However, in order to really feel clean, I like bar soap best. As a result, I have to deal with the messy soap scum that comes with having a bar of soap in the shower/bath tub. Yuck. Without a doubt that is the part I like the least. Enter in the best solution ever! Crochet soap lifts! Not only are they perfect for keeping your shower/bath tub cleaner, they are environmentally friendly as well.

Recently I have discovered DMC Nova Vita Upcylced yarn and I feel like I’ve hit the jackpot! To be sure, I am always seeking ways to help our environment. Anytime I can use ecofriendly yarn or find projects that support this, I am instantly a fan. DMC Nova Vita Upcycled yarn checks so many of the boxes that help make you feel good about using it. Even more, these crochet soap lifts use plarn which makes them even more envoironmentally friendly.

What is Plarn and Why use it?

Plarn is plastic grocery bags cut into strips and then linked together to form a ball of plarn/yarn. There are a few tutorials on how to do this. One is at plastic bag crafts website which included diagrams to follow. This is the one that I used to get started. Additionally thesprucecrafts.com had a few video tutorials with 3 different methods on how to make plarn. I have not tried all 3 methods. In fact I have only made my plarn with the method of cutting the strips and linking together. However if you are more of a video tutorial kind of learner, this may be the link you’d want to follow. Or just do a google search of ‘How to make plarn’ and I’m sure you will come up with lots of choices to learn.

Crochet Soap Lift Pattern

In all honesty, this project is a work in progress. Originally I was making these with simple acrylic yarn. Upon discovering DMC Nova Vita Upcycled yarn, I revamped the pattern a little. This is by no means how I would normally write a pattern, but I did want to share the notes I have taken so far to give you a starting point if you wanted to try to make one yourself.

Crochet Hook Size: M (9.0 MM)
Materials: DMC Nova Vita Yarn and Plarn

Instructions:
Holding together one strand of the DMC Nova Vita Yarn and one strand of Plarn, Ch 7.
Foundation: SC in the back of each ch st across (6 sc). ch 1. turn.
Rows 2-4: SC in each st (6 sc). Ch 1. turn.
At the end of row 4, ch 1 and turn to work 4 sc across the short edge, ch 1, 6 sc across the long side, ch 1 and then 4 sc across the other short edge. No ch 1. Instead sl st in the next st on the long side. Then work a SC in the front loop of each stitch around. Fasten off.

A few more things to know:

To sum it up, the pattern above is a VERY rough draft. I have just started to stitch these myself and it’s a work in progress. I only typed up what I had so if you wanted to attempt to make these yourself you would have a starting point. It is true you may find many errors with trying to use what I’ve typed. Of course I will update that pattern as I tweak it and work on it a little more.

Lastly I wanted to make sure you noted the advertisement above indication DMC’s free shipping offer with purchase of $40 or more. Undoubtedly you will want to try several of DMC Nova Vita Upcycled Yarn colors. There are too many to choose from to just pick one. To be sure you will easily meet that minimum shipping requirement!

Happy Stitching!
